Culture of North Carolina



North Carolina is a state lying in the extreme east of America, along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The state has a great diversity as regards its geographical features. On one side of North Carolina, lies the vast stretches of sandy coastal plains, while on the other side lies the high Appalachian mountain range. Between these two, lies the piedmont plateau region. The state, due to its physical diversity has a variety population, that differs completely from each other. The state of North Carolina also has a long and eventful past to its credit, which adds to the great diversities among its people and their lifestyle. The state was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes.

The major tribes living in this area were, Cape Fear Indians, Waxhaw, Saponi, Tutelo, Waccamaw, Lumbee, Cherokee, Tuscarora, Cheraw, Pamlico, Meherrin,Machapunga,Coree, Coharie, and Catawba. The first expeditions in the region, which is presently known as North Carolina was conducted by the Spanish in 1524. next came the British, lead by Sir Walter Raleigh, but failed miserably. But they finally succeeded in building their stronghold over the area. The intermingling of the Native American, Spanish and British lifestyles led to the formation of a unique culture of North Carolina.
